The prized southern bluefin tuna industry, worth hundreds of millions of dollars to Australia, could be heading for a major collapse unless a moratorium on fishing the species is adopted.
That is the view of TRAFFIC, a program of the conservation organisation WWF, and several scientists who are becoming increasingly concerned at the low level of spawning stock and the low levels of annual recruitment of young fish to that of breeding stock.
The issue will come to a head at the annual Commission for the Conservation of the Southern Bluefin Tuna (CCSBT), which meets in South Korea next week.
Lateline understands the scientific report to be presented at the meeting is expected to show a dramatic fall in stocks.
The delegates to the commission have all signed confidentiality agreements and the true state of the stock will only be revealed once the meeting finishes on Friday, October 23.
One of the delegates to the CCSBT, CSIRO scientist Campbell Davies, cannot reveal the latest scientific data but says the information from the 2008 reports shows the stock is not recovering, despite significant cuts to quotas over the past 10 years.read more

Don't touch ... Mako sharks are about to become a protected species. Source: The Daily Telegraph
THE dangers of living on Australia's east coast are more apparent than ever. Read all about the sharks leaving NSW swimmers in fear.
RECREATIONAL fishing for mako sharks in Australia will be banned - despite the species being common off our coast - because of efforts to save an entirely separate population of the sharks in the Mediterranean.
Australia is a signatory to an international treaty designed to protect endangered animals around the globe.
The UN-sponsored Convention on Migratory Species is in the process of listing several sharks, including short-finned makos, for complete protection.
Short-finned mako numbers have plunged in the Mediterranean Sea and the Eastern Atlantic Ocean.
Under Australia's Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act it is prohibited to "kill, injure or take" members of a listed migratory species in Commonwealth waters.
A spokesman for Federal Environment Minister Peter Garrett said yesterday the protection order would take effect in January.
But a respected fisheries scientist said yesterday any Australian ban was "mystifying - there is no biological sense to it. There is no evidence of any connection between the populations of makos in the Mediterranean and the short finned makos off the Australian coast," Dr Julian Pepperell said.
"Makos just don't move between Australia and the Med. Banning fishing here will do absolutely nothing to help the makos there.
"This situation seems to be the result of a loophole where, if a species is listed in trouble anywhere in the world, and is listed as migratory, protective measures apply to all signatory country."
Mr Garrett's spokesman could not explain how an Australian ban would aid Mediterranean mako sharks.
Dr Pepperell, a marine fisheries consultant who specialises in large open water fish, said makos were a popular target for recreational anglers.
"There is a fishing competition in Sydney which sees more than 50 makos tagged and released each year," he said.
"I suspect they're as common as they ever were off NSW."
There are already fishing bans in Australia for great whites and grey nurse sharks.More information can be viwed on the forum
